John Oster scored on the 90th minute mark to break the hearts of the Peterborough United players and supporters as Doncaster Rovers somehow snatched all three points at London Road despite being on the back foot for much of the match.
It was a lively start to the action at London Road as Posh forced two early corners, while at the other end, Scott Griffiths did well to produce a last-ditch tackle to deny Billy Sharp.
The long throws of Exodus Geohaghon were an early threat too with Scott Griffiths seeing a left-foot shot blocked as the visitors struggled to clear on 13 minutes.
A superb volley from Charlie Lee, from fully 30-yards, went straight into the arms of goalkeeper Neil Sullivan as Posh continued to dominate in the early exchanges in front of an appreciative crowd.
A left-foot curler from Martin Woods went wide of the target moments later as the midfielder was afforded a bit of time and space 25-yards from goal. Doncaster won their first corner kick on 20 minutes after Neil Roberts' centre deflected behind off Craig Mackail-Smith.
The visitors were certainly confident in possession, knocking the ball around with reasonable ease in midfield, showing good movement off the ball and a willingness to go past their strikers to support the attack from deep.
Posh should have broken the deadlock on 23 minutes as a free-kick from Torres picked out Geohaghon, his powerful header was diverted over the crossbar by an unmarked Mackail-Smith.
Experienced midfield man John Oster fired wide at the other end as chances continued to be created by both sides. Zakuani headed a Torres corner kick wide on 36 minutes, but he was under severe pressure at the back post.
The best opportunity of the game so far fell to Torres on 38 minutes as a superb counter-attack from the hosts had Doncaster struggling, the ball rolled into the Argentine's path from Mackail-Smith, the midfielder took a touch and fired goal-wards only to be denied by the fists of Sullivan, diving to his left.
Sharp should have done better at the other end after twisting in the box, but he fired straight at Joe Lewis from close-range after good work from Dean Shiels. The lively Woods fired a powerful left-foot shot narrowly over the upright on 43 minutes after a good spell of pressure from Doncaster.
Half-time: Posh 0-0 Doncaster Rovers
Posh lost the services of Liam Dickinson to a hamstring injury at the break, and he joins Aaron Mclean, who missed this game due to a knee injury sustained in training on Monday.
An unbelievable save from from Neil Sullivan somehow kept out a powerful downward header from Charlie Lee on 50 minutes after Zakuani headed a deep Tommy Rowe cross back across goal.
Rowe then found the side-netting after Sullivan spilled a shot from substitute Reuben Reid as Posh continued to threaten, knowing a victory was imperative to keep alive their hopes of staging an unlikely escape from the drop.
Lee saw a header tipped over the crossbar by the busy Sullivan moments later, but they couldn't withstand the following corner as Rowe's centre was headed past Sullivan by LEE. A scramble followed as Posh thought they had been denied again, but the assistant referee had already given the goal to the delight of the home faithful.
The visitors should have levelled less than 60 seconds later as Emmanuel-Thomas laid the ball across goal for Sharp, but he blazed high and wide before Shields found the side-netting with a dipping shot moments later.
Jim Gannon's men were still the more dangerous though and Mackail-Smith's dipping volley was clutched by the veteran Sullivan on 59 minutes. The boys in blue were playing arguably their best football for many months and Little displayed good ability on the ball to deliver a pinpoint cross for Rowe on 63 minutes, but he planted his header inches past the post.
Doncaster equalised on 66 minutes and you have to say it was a stunning strike from Gareth ROBERTS, who arrowed a sublime volley past Joe Lewis and into the far corner after Posh had appeared to clear the initial danger.
Despite not being a big side, Doncaster were struggling to cope at set-pieces with the movement of the attackers and Zakuani should have done better from a Rowe delivery on 70 minutes, but he headed down into the ground and Sullivan wasn't troubled.
Emmanuel-Thomas fired wide of the near post after linking well with Sharp a few minutes later as Sean O'Driscoll's men went in search of the winning goal. Excellent play from the hard-working Mackail-Smith saw him trick his way past Chambers on 76 minutes, but his low centre was just out of the reach of the onrushing Lee.
Lee then headed a Geohaghon throw in over the bar and you certainly couldn't fault Posh for either commitment, passion or even chances created, they were firmly on top in this game and but for a once in a lifetime strike from the left-back, they would still be ahead in his Championship clash.
Mackail-Smith was denied by the fingertips of Sullivan on 85 minutes after good work from Reid as Posh came again with a wave of attacks. However, in a cruel twist of fate, it was the visitors who snatched it right on the 90 minute mark as the visitors counter-attacked at pace and as the ball was rolled across the box by Sharp, OSTER was there to fire into an empty net.
